Inside Dakota Football – 53 Top 10 & 7 All-time Records Marked 11-M FB in Season of Change in 2013

By Dan Genzler, SDsportshistory.com columnist

An 11-man football season marked by change before it began ended with numerous alterations in the South Dakota high school football record book.

In 2013, the high school football scene adjusted to a new 7-man class structure, which included four 11-man classes for the first time in history. Along the way, Sioux Falls Lincoln captured its second-ever state title (AA, 2008) in the new 11AAA class during the school’s first-ever unbeaten campaign. In the restructured 11AA, Pierre won a first-ever school title. West Central, which has set a high standard of excellence, won an unprecedented 12th 11A title in 14 appearances since the playoffs began in 1981. The 11B champion was Canton, which took home a second title (2006) in the playoff era.

Along the way, the 2013 season was defined by recording-breaking efforts and a large number of top 10 performances both from an individual and team perspective. In total, South Dakota players and teams registered 53 top-10 all-time marks, including seven all-time records, in game, season or career totals.  The all-time marks included Dayton Bender of Brookings who had a 98-yard kickoff return for a TD that tied the all-time record held by two others. In receiving A.J. Garrow of Brandon Valley set the game record with 14 catches. In rushing, Sioux Falls Lincoln senior Caden Quintanilla tied the mark for 100-yard rushing games with 10 (tied with two others) while Chamberlain broke the all-time mark for rushes in a game with 75. Then, there is the fabulous performance of Rush Milne of Madison, who established three all-time records, including rushing attempts in a game with 53. Milne, whose dad Tom is an assistant football coach at Madison, also broke the record for rushing TDs in a season with 34; and most overall TDs in a season with 37. He also finished tied with Quintanilla for second all-time with 57 rushing TDs.

Regardless, excellence on the gridiron marked the 2013 campaign. SDsporthistory.com provides a breakdown of the records and marks in game, season and career marks.
